Social Impact

For many of us including myself, access to electricity is taken for granted isn't it? Its so engrained in our daily routines, we switch on a light and charge phones without thinking about it. In Gihanga, where households currently live without access to electricity, these everyday actions are not taken for granted. Lighting, communication, and safe travel after dark require planning, compromise, or cost that can limit opportunities.

Introducing solar-powered lighting systems creates opportunity for activities that were previously constrained by the lack of electricity: studying in the evenings, accessing information through radio, staying connected by mobile, and travelling more safely after dark.

Installation Day

The team met with families and installed six solar-powered lighting systems in Gihanga, bringing light to homes that previously had no access to electricity.

Much of the day was spent up ladders, routing cables from the rooftop-mounted solar panels to provide lighting in each room.

Next we will be installing a larger solar array and battery for the community centre.
