Workshop

To facilitate the projects detailed below, alongside supporting a range of other skill development initiatives, we are constructing a workshop in partnership with a number of charities in Burundi.

 Solar Lighting

For our first student-led project, we are collaborating with the YADA Community Centre and neighbouring households in Gihanga to install solar-powered lighting kits in homes, along with a larger system for the community centre. These kits provide home lighting, a torch for night-time travel, a radio, and a phone charger. The community currently does not have access to electricity, and this project supports access to safe, reliable lighting.

Locally Manufactured Small Wind Turbines

Locally manufactured wind turbines offer a cost effective and community-driven solution for rural electrification around Lake Tanganyika. Each component can be found in the markets in Bujumbura, and can be maintained locally, "if you can build it you can fix it"

Students will learn the fundamentals of electricity generation and build a generator from local parts.

Solar Boat Burundi

Fuel shortages have increased operating costs for fishermen on Lake Tanganyika, making daily trips less affordable.

Solar powered boats offer an alternative to petrol powered outboards. Using Burundi's abundant sunlight to provide power enables low-cost operation year-round, removing reliance on volatile fuel supplies.

Getting involved in developing the project will give engineers and students experience in a range of technical skills such as resource assessments, solar panel array design, electrical wiring, battery storage and motor control. This is also a great way to develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

Our first step is to build a small proof of concept to introduce the technology to the region and develop knowledge, practical skills and connections.
